Tools

Presented here is a selection of software tools (other than Adobe Photoshop) used/useful for the ADIEUX Project.

Aware JPEG2000 Image Server A commercial server application supplied as part of the ArchivePack suite of software tools for organizations managing digital archives. The suite also includes a metadata editor. It is used by the Library of Congress for its American Memory collections.
DotImage

Atalasoft markets document and imaging toolkits, for which a LuraWave-based JPEG2000 codec is available to provide "full metadata support" (IPTC, XMP, XML & UUID boxes). Also encodes PDF files using JPEG2000 compression. Pricing targets enterprises not individuals.

Exif Reader Although not updated since 2003, Exif Reader is a useful Windows application for displaying photo metadata. Freeware.
ExifTool Versatile (command-line) freeware for reading, writing and editing a variety of image document metadata (Exif, IPTC, XMP, ICC Profile, GPS, etc.). It is also available as a Perl library.
HashTab HashTab Shell Extension is a useful tool for verifying authenticity. This utility calculates MD5 and SHA1 hashes as well as the CRC-32 "fingerprint" of a file. Files extracted from a portmanteau distro can thus be easily compared with originals to check whether they are identical (i.e. that the embedding process has not compromised the integrity of the data).
IrfanView Developed by Irfan Skiljan, IrfanView is a powerful image viewer with some batch-processing capabilities (freeware for non-commercial use). One reason for its popularity is that there are many plugins available to provide support for additional file formats (including JPEG2000). It is one of the viewers recommended by the Library of Congress for its American Memory collections.
iTag A free tool for adding title, description and keyword tags to using standard IPTC and XMP headers. GPS information can also be added.
Kakadu Described as "a comprehensive framework for JPEG2000 developers," this software is commercial and partially intended for demanding medical, geospatial, and digital cinema applications. However, a non-commercial license is available for US$250 (version 6.x). The user can define ROIs, adding labels and metadata.
LuraWave

LuraWave Image Content Server is designed for large organizations with digital archives. It delivers JPEG2000-based images and associated metadata.

LuraTech also offers IrfanView plugins.

MATLAB

MATLAB is discussed in the Software section.

Qtech Hide&View This implementation of BPCS steganography is discussed in depth elsewhere on this site.
SearchPDF Although apparently no longer being actively developed (Acrobat 6 is described as New!), SearchPDF and its associated applications provide facilities not yet offered with Acrobat 9 (such as the ability to enter custom metadata into PDF files remotely).

Listing of the above resources is intended for reference purposes only and should not be considered an endorsement by the ADIEUX Project.
